QuickBooks error the file doesn’t exists: Follow these steps to fix it…!

QuickBooks is considered to be one of the best accounting solutions for small and mid-sized industries. Though, it is one of the most preferred accounting software but it is also susceptible to some errors. One such error you may encounter while working on it is QuickBooks Error “The file doesn’t exists”. This error indicates that a particular file cannot be opened in your system. In such situations, you should check that some other program is not using these files or it is a read-only file.

This error usually occurs when a file is read incorrectly due to some unknown reasons. You will receive the following error messages; if you come across the QuickBooks Error “The file exists”:

Error Message:

“The file you are trying to open is facing issues. Make sure if it is not already being worked on or is on a read only mode.”.


“(Windows) The file exists”.

There are many scenarios where you may encounter this QuickBooks error, like:

  • When you are trying to download payroll updates. Get QuickBooks Payroll support if you don’t know how to do that.
  • When trying to access federal or state forms.
  • Paying scheduled liabilities.

Resolving QuickBooks Error “The file exists” error:

Solution I:

If you encounter this error, then select the “OK” option on the error message prompt. If this error still persists then follow the steps recommended below:

  • Select the OK option and install the progress bar.
  • Continue clicking on OK, if you continue to receive the error until your update is not 100% complete.
  • Close and open your QuickBooks software.
  • Download and install all the updates that are available for your QB software.
  • Close Your QuickBooks software now and reboot your system.
  • Now open your QuickBooks as the Administrator.
  • Reboot your system, and then try to open your file again.

Solution II:

For Windows XP

  • Close all the applications and software running in your system and reboot your system.
  • Open QuickBooks and try to download & install the Payroll updates.

For Windows Vista

  • Log in to the system as the Administrator.
  • Go to Control Panel from Windows
  • Go to option User Accounts or User Accounts and Family Safety.
  • From the User Account window, go to Users Accounts.
  • Check whether the UAC checkbox is checked or not. If it is checked then clear it and click on
  • Restart your computer.

For Windows 7, 8 and 10

  • To open the User Account Control setting, follow the steps below:
    • For the access of Control Panel:
      • Windows 7: Go to Windows icon from the bottom left of your screen and click on the control Panel tab.
      • Windows 8: In start menu search field type Control Panel. When you locate the file, click on it and open it.
      • Windows 10: In the Search field of the task bar, type Control Panel. After locating it, open it.
    • In the search field specified, you will have to enter UAC, and then select the option Change User Account Control.
    • Now you will have to choose from any one option from below:
      • Turn off the User Account Control: Move your cursor to Never notify option, go to OK. Now, you may receive a prompt to enter password or the confirmation, then do it and start your computer again.
      • Turn on the User Account Control: Move your cursor to notified option, go to OK. Now, you may receive a prompt to enter password or the confirmation, then do it and start your computer again.
    • Some additional steps to resolve your error:
      • Configure your Windows firewall so it does not interfere with QuickBooks.
      • Use the cable-connected Internet connections when you are trying to update and not the wireless connection.
      • You may receive a message, run reboot.bat.
